How to upscale a video

Upscaling is a finishing step. It goes at the end of the process, after the edit is locked — not at the start, where every later change would throw the work away.

Recovers plausible detail

The model reconstructs texture and edges that the low-resolution frame implies. On faces, fabric, and foliage the difference at full size is substantial.

Cleans up soft footage

Slightly soft or noisy sources usually improve more than they enlarge, because the model treats the noise as something to resolve rather than magnify.

Some platforms and clients require a resolution the generation model does not output. Upscaling is the practical bridge rather than a reason to change model.

Does not invent what was never there

Detail that the original frame does not imply — unreadable text, a face that is six pixels wide — is reconstructed as a guess. Treat it as enhancement, not evidence.

Does not fix compression damage

Blocking and banding get enlarged with everything else. Going back to a better source beats any amount of upscaling.

Where upscaling belongs in a workflow

Upscaling is the last thing you should do and one of the first things people try. The reason to put it last is that every operation after it — a colour pass, a crop, a re-encode for a platform — either undoes some of the benefit or costs more because the frames are now four times larger. Lock the edit, then upscale the delivered cut.

It is also worth being honest about what the model is doing. An upscaler is not recovering information that was recorded and lost; it is generating detail consistent with what remains. On texture, that produces genuinely better pictures. On anything that has to be accurate — a licence plate, a document, a face far from camera — it produces a confident invention, which is fine for a mood piece and unacceptable in anything evidential.

Source quality dominates the result. Two clips at the same resolution can upscale completely differently if one was exported at a high bitrate and the other squeezed through a messaging app. If you have any access to a better master, going back for it will beat every model choice available here.

Finally, test on the hardest shot rather than the prettiest. A wide, static, well-lit frame upscales well almost regardless of model; a dim handheld shot with motion blur is where the differences show. Choosing a model on the second kind of shot means the rest of the sequence is a safe bet.
